NHS dentist Westminster: 23 practices say they are taking new adult NHS patients and 27 are taking children. The list, the 2026 charges and urgent care.

Finding an NHS dentist in Westminster is easier than the national headlines suggest. When we searched the NHS website’s dentist finder across the borough on 8 November 2026, 27 of the 39 NHS dental practices with a Westminster postcode said they were accepting new NHS patients for routine check-ups. 23 of them were taking adults as well as children, and the other four were taking children only, or children and adults who get free dental care.

There is no catchment area and no registration for NHS dentists. You can phone any practice, in Westminster or anywhere else in England, and ask for an NHS appointment. Below is the full list of Westminster practices that say they have space, what NHS treatment costs, and what to do if you need help today.

How NHS dentists work: no catchment, no registration

NHS dentistry does not work like a GP surgery. The NHS website says you can contact any NHS dentist and ask for an appointment, and practices are not limited to patients from a set area. You might fill in a form at your first visit, but that does not register you with the practice permanently: if you do not go for a while, there is no guarantee you can get NHS care there again.

So the approach that works is simple: pick practices from the list below, phone them, and ask specifically for an NHS appointment. Many practices also offer private care, and if you do not say NHS, you may be booked privately. If you work in Westminster but live elsewhere, a practice near your office is just as open to you as one near home.

The other twelve Westminster practices either had not confirmed whether they were taking new patients, which the NHS website says means you should ring and ask, or offer only urgent or specialist care such as orthodontics. Pimlico and Victoria residents may also find space just over the river in Kennington and Vauxhall, and Maida Vale residents in Kilburn: the NHS search shows practices in neighbouring boroughs too, and you can use any of them.

What NHS dental treatment costs

Adults in England who do not qualify for free treatment pay one of three fixed charges for each course of treatment, whatever the practice. These are the charges the NHS website lists in November 2026:

Band Charge What it covers
Band 1 £27.90 Examination, diagnosis, advice, X-rays, a scale and polish if clinically needed
Band 2 £76.60 Everything in Band 1, plus fillings, root canal treatment and extractions
Band 3 £332.10 Everything in Bands 1 and 2, plus crowns, dentures and bridges
Urgent treatment £27.90 Assessment and urgent care such as a temporary filling or pain relief

You pay one charge per course of treatment, for the highest band you need. If you need two fillings and an X-ray, that is one Band 2 charge, not three separate fees. The dentist should tell you the cost before treatment starts. The full list is on the NHS page on how much NHS dental treatment costs.

Who gets free NHS dental treatment

NHS dental care is free if you are:

  • under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education
  • pregnant, or have had a baby in the last 12 months
  • getting treatment from a hospital dentist
  • receiving, or your partner receives, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, or Universal Credit with income below the set limit

If you are on a low income but do not qualify outright, the NHS Low Income Scheme can cover some or all of the cost. You need proof at the practice, such as an HC2 certificate or a maternity exemption certificate, and you can be fined if you claim free treatment you are not entitled to.

If you need a dentist urgently

Any NHS dentist can give you urgent treatment, even if they are not taking new patients and you have never been there before. The NHS website says to phone a dentist and ask for an urgent appointment, and most of the practices above list urgent care.

If you cannot get through, or it is out of hours, call NHS 111 or use 111 online. They can book you into an urgent dental service. Go to A&E, at St Mary’s in Paddington or Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Fulham Road, only for serious problems: heavy bleeding that will not stop, a facial injury, or swelling that is spreading to your eye or neck or making it hard to breathe or swallow.

If you cannot find an NHS dentist

If none of the practices you call has space, contact the integrated care board that pays for dental services in the area. For Westminster, that is NHS North West London. It cannot force a practice to take you, but it can tell you where NHS appointments are available. Our page on registering with a GP in Westminster explains the different rules for GP surgeries, where you are registered with one practice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to live in Westminster to use a Westminster NHS dentist? No. There are no catchment areas for NHS dentists. You can ask any NHS practice in England for an appointment, whether it is near your home, your work or anywhere else.

How many NHS dentists in Westminster are taking new patients? On 8 November 2026, 27 of the 39 NHS dental practices with a Westminster postcode showed as accepting new NHS patients for routine care on the NHS website. 23 were taking all adults, and four were taking children only, or children and adults who get free care.

Can I see an NHS dentist for urgent pain if I am not registered anywhere? Yes. Any NHS dentist can see you for urgent treatment, even if they are not taking new patients. Phone a practice and ask, or call NHS 111 if you cannot get an appointment or it is out of hours.

Is NHS dental treatment free for children in Westminster? Yes. Under-18s, and under-19s in full-time education, get free NHS dental treatment everywhere in England. All 27 practices on our list were taking new child patients.

Why does the practice want me to fill in a registration form? It is just a record of your details and medical history. It does not register you with that dentist the way you register with a GP, and it does not guarantee future NHS appointments there.
