Oxford Street's star lights return with new Harry Potter designs. The switch-on date is not out yet; last year's was 3 November. The street is traffic free.
Oxford Street’s Christmas lights will be joined this year by illuminated Harry Potter designs, but New West End Company has not yet said when they switch on. Its 7 October announcement of a partnership with HBO Max says the switch-on date and the designs “will be released in the coming weeks”. Last year the lights went on on Monday 3 November.
It will also be the first Christmas on a traffic-free Oxford Street. Transport for London says the stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street closes to all traffic from Monday 26 October 2026.
The quick answer
- Is it on this year? Yes. New West End Company has confirmed the star lights return alongside new Harry Potter illuminations.
- Switch-on date: not announced as of 17 October. Last year’s was Monday 3 November 2025.
- What is new: “a series of specially created illuminated designs” from the Harry Potter stories, plus a Harry Potter shop opening on 4 November.
- Getting there: no buses on Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street from 26 October.
- Cost: free to walk under the lights.
What New West End Company has announced
New West End Company is the business improvement district that runs the Oxford Street and Bond Street lights. On 7 October it announced “a landmark partnership” with HBO Max, timed to the Christmas launch of the new HBO series Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In its words:
- “Alongside Oxford Street’s iconic star Christmas lights, visitors will be treated to a series of specially created illuminated designs to bring the world of Harry Potter to life.”
- The Harry Potter Shop Oxford Street, which it calls “the UK’s largest official Harry Potter flagship shop”, opens on 4 November.
- “Further information on the Christmas programme, the official light switch-on, plus more details and visuals of the Harry Potter lights, will be released in the coming weeks.”
Nothing else is confirmed: not the date, the time, any line-up, or how long the Harry Potter designs stay up.
The Harry Potter shop
The shop’s own website describes the Oxford Street flagship as a Diagon Alley setting with a Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon over a Gringotts area, a full-sized Knight Bus at the back of the store, and a Leaky Cauldron café serving Butterbeer. It lists Oxford Street exclusives including a Diagon Alley wand and an Oxford Street Funko Pop. Expect queues in its first weeks, which will coincide with the lights.
What happened last year
Oxford Street’s own Christmas 2025 article said: “we kick off the festive celebrations for the nation on Monday 3rd November when our Sky Full of Stars lights will shine bright above Oxford Street” (Oxford Street). The charity partner was Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity.
That puts the switch-on in the first days of November, which is also when the Harry Potter shop opens. It is a reasonable guess for 2026, but it is our guess, not an announcement. Regent Street has confirmed its own switch-on for Thursday 5 November, closed to traffic from 5pm to 9pm; see our West End Christmas lights page.
A traffic-free Oxford Street
TfL’s Oxford Street area works page says the street “will be completely traffic free from Monday 26 October 2026 between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street”. It adds that there will be some construction as the improvements begin, but “limited works during the Christmas period”.
For anyone coming to see the lights, that means:
- No buses along the lit stretch. From 1am on Saturday 24 October, routes 7, N7, 94, N113 and N137 finish at Marble Arch, TfL says. The full list of route changes is on our Oxford Street traffic-free page.
- More room to walk. In past years the lights hung over a street full of buses and taxis; this year the pavement-to-pavement width is open to people on foot.
- Use the Tube. Marble Arch, Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road stations all serve the street, and the Elizabeth line stops at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road.
Driving to see the lights makes little sense. If you do, our Westminster parking zones and hours page explains the controlled hours in W1, and our roadworks and travel page has live closures.
Still to be confirmed
- The switch-on date and time, and whether there is a public event.
- Images of the Harry Potter designs and which part of the street they cover.
- How long the lights stay up.
We will update this page as soon as New West End Company publishes them. For other Christmas dates in the borough, see What’s On in Westminster this month and our Covent Garden lights page.
